About EIMF

The basis of this EIMF is the need for Kenyan universities to evolve into dynamic hubs of innovation and entrepreneurship. This framework will provide a structured approach to evaluating key dimensions of entrepreneurial capacity and serve as a foundation for future growth and improvement. By deploying this framework, universities will be able to comprehensively assess their status, identify improvement areas, and delineate a roadmap for advancing towards becoming entrepreneurial institutions. The EIMF considers the following five levels, towards becoming an entrepreneurial university.

Traditional Academic and Research Institutions

Universities in this level focuses on teaching and research but have limited funding and lack infrastructure for research commercialization, they face challenges with outdated research policies, particularly in terms of commercialization and entrepreneurial strategies, and do not actively engage in the entrepreneurship, industry, and innovation ecosystems.

Emerging Entrepreneurial Institutions

Universities have initiated efforts to boost entrepreneurship, innovation, and research commercialization, with at least one dedicated infrastructure supporting technology transfer and partial staffing. However, limited resource allocation and operational challenges persist, and despite engaging with the local private sector, the awareness and operationalization of relevant commercialization and entrepreneurial policies, such as startup policy and innovation strategy, remain below 5%.

Developing Entrepreneurial Institutions

The universities have actively fosterd entrepreneurship and innovation, demonstrated by an updated entrepreneurial/startup/commercialization policy with over 10% awareness. It promotes an entrepreneurship culture through a reward system, backed by three fully staffed infrastructures supporting technology transfer. With substantial financial allocation and a systematic approach, the university facilitates the establishment of four startups or generates $5,000 in licensing revenue annually.

Mature Entrepreneurial Institutions

The universities are seamlessly embedded in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, placing entrepreneurship and innovation at its foundation. It actively shapes national innovation and entrepreneurial strategies, fostering a vibrant entrepreneurial culture evident in numerous student and faculty startups and awards. With comprehensive infrastructure for technology transfer, a well-defined commercialization pathway, and support for over six startups and spinoffs, the university consistently generates $7,500 in licensing revenue annually.

World-class Entrepreneurial Institutions

The university stand as a global entrepreneurial trailblazer, contributing significantly to regional economic growth, with startups and innovators garnering global acclaim. It boasts specialized infrastructure for targeted technology transfer, generating substantial financial resources from commercialization to fuel further research translation. Active in advocacy, the university champions policies facilitating commercialization and entrepreneurial ecosystems both nationally and internationally, supported by numerous international partnerships for research commercialization.
